Mr. Hubert Smith

Hubert "Smitty" Smith was born on July 24, 1957, in Durham, North Carolina.  He transformed a challenging life journey into a powerful platform for positive change. After experiencing early childhood trauma and separation from his parents at age ten, Smith was relocated to Boston, Massachusetts, where he was raised by his grandmother. His teenage years coincided with the tumultuous period of forced school integration in Boston, leading to a series of events that eventually resulted in his incarceration.

In 1978, at age 20, Smith received a life sentence without the possibility of parole. During his 44 years of incarceration, he pursued justice through various legal channels, facing numerous setbacks but never losing hope. His persistence led to a breakthrough in 2022 when a judge

reduced his sentence, acknowledging constitutional violations in his original case. Smith was released on parole on October 6, 2022.

Today, Smith serves as a justice reform advocate and motivational speaker, sharing his powerful testimony of perseverance and transformation. He works as a consultant for those facing

unlawful convictions, drawing from his extensive firsthand experience with the legal system. His community work focuses on supporting formerly incarcerated individuals transitioning back into society, offering both practical guidance and emotional support.
